The musical explores themes of social class, gender roles, and following your dreams, all set to the music of Elton John.
Billy Elliot is set in the fictional town of "Everington," County Durham, in Northern England during the 1984–85 coal miners’ strike. Behind the scenes of Billy is a world of economic decline, social conflict, and community solidarity. The 1984–1985 strike by the National Union of Mineworkers, which was fighting against the closure of pits under the politics of Maggie Thatcher's government.
