Poetic Vocabularies brings together artworks from the Campbelltown City Council Art Collection that employ text in artistic practice. Text can serve as a powerful tool, both visually and conceptually, enriching artistic expression and communication. It can be integrated into artworks in numerous ways, from a few words to complex narratives, it can be humorous and autobiographical, and can range from functional text that provides context to textual elements that are themselves artistic creations.

The Campbelltown City Council Art Collection comprises almost 1600 artworks by more than 650 Australian artists. It is focused on major artworks by leading contemporary artists from, living in or connected to Western Sydney, and from around Australia. The Collection grows each year through donations, bequests, the acquisitive Fisher's Ghost Art Award, and through the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program.
